My inspiration for launching France in Between
After over three decades of life in France, I‘m in the thrall of a desire to see even more of it. So I’ve been asking myself: more what, exactly?
Stunningly scenic villages? I’ve visited hundreds.
The hallowed French countryside? I’m surrounded by it.
Paris? Yes, MORE s’il vous plaît…but with a daughter living there, it’s part of my life already.
Something else has drawn me in: France’s small to middling towns.
My fascination with petites villes and villes moyennes has defined itself slowly. Let’s face it – they’re not what you’re supposed to love about France. Even the French won’t often wax effusively about visiting Bourges. Or Moulins. Or Saint-Quentin. Or Aurillac.
But I will — if I feel they’re worthy of effusively waxing.
What you can expect from France in Between
If you are on the lookout for new experiences in France, far from the increasingly maddening crowds, you’ll be getting plenty of ideas.
If you are intrigued by an insider’s view of what’s going on behind the scenes in these towns, I’ll be diving into some unexpected topics.
My posts/newsletters will be based on my own jaunts, overnighters, and mini-road trips, plus the research that goes into them — starting now, in June 2024. No expat back pages.
I’m in my mid-sixties, and I now have a wine glass list.
I can’t wait to share it with you.
PS: I never say never, but France in Between is 100% free for the foreseeable future.
This is exactly what I LOVE about France. Many of my American friends have said, ‘Once you have seen one small village, you’ve seen them all.’ Boy, not me! I love all the higgely piggely roof tops and all the different stones with which they are built. We happened to
have landed in the most perfect village of 200 because we fell in love with the country-side in Southern Burgundy. Our 20 years there were heaven for me and then we had to move back to the US. After 4 years, I’m still not quite recovered. So, believe me, I will love hearing about the history of your region. Thank you🥰🤪
I love the concept. I'm trying something similar for Japan here - https://lessknownjapan.substack.com/
